Blackfin Catfish Aspidoras sp CW052 Corydoras

The various catfish of the genus Aspidoras are a recent division from the Corydoras, and differ in having a more elongated body, as well as a “supraoccipital fontanel”. Despite the longer body shapes, the name “Aspidoras” does not refer to a snake (Asp), but instead to a shield — Aspis is the Latin word for shield, and refers to the heavy scales that these, and all Corydoras type catfish have.
Other than having a slightly different body shape, most Aspidoras tend to be a bit smaller than Corydoras. They can be maintained in much the same way, and should be treated as Corydoras. Aspidoras will do best in small schools of at least a half dozen individuals. They should not be maintained with aggressive or larger fish that may see them as meals.
