Description

24K Yellow Shrimp

Neocaridina davidi var. “Yellow”, commonly known as yellow shrimp or 24K yellow, is one of the most popular dwarf shrimp varieties in the aquarium hobby. As the name suggests, this shrimp is selectively bred for its super bright, eye-catching yellow color. They are less fussy about water values and breeds easily, which makes it a great option for anyone just starting out.

Topic Key Points (target = “set it and forget it” stability)
Ideal Tank Size 20 L (≈ 5 gal) minimum for a stable colony; 40–60 L gives a larger buffering volume.
Filtration & Flow Sponge or matten filter (gentle flow, bio‑film friendly). Add fine pre‑filter on intakes.
Temperature 20 – 24 °C (68 – 75 °F). Brief 18–28 °C tolerated, but color and breeding peak in low‑20s °C.
pH 6.6 – 7.4 (neutral is perfect). Avoid acids below 6.2 or hard‑alkaline >7.6.
GH / KH GH 5‑8 dGH (≈ 90‑140 ppm CaCO₃) • KH 2‑4 dKH (≈ 35‑70 ppm). Too soft → failed molts; too hard → patchy coloration.
TDS 160 – 220 ppm. Use remineralized RO/DI water for consistency.
Substrate Inert sand/gravel or buffered shrimp soil; plenty of mosses, leaf litter, cholla wood for biofilm.
Diet 70 % biofilm/algae + 30 % supplemental: quality shrimp pellets, blanched veg (spinach, zucchini), botanicals. Feed lightly—remove leftovers after 2‑3 h.
Tank‑Mates Best: snails (ramshorn, nerite), otocinclus, tiny rasboras. Avoid anything big enough to fit a shrimp in its mouth—yes, even “peaceful” tetras.
Water Changes 10 ‑ 15 % weekly with temperature‑matched, remineralized water. Slow drip to avoid TDS shock.
Hiding/Climbing Dense clumps of Java moss, Subwassertang, or mesh mats; shrimp tubes; botanicals.
